Scuba Classes
MTSS takes diver education very seriously and we understand that unless we do an excellent job of training, we cannot expect our customers to entrust us with their equipment, travel and other diving needs. We have one of the top teams of PADI instructors in the country, from our full-time staff to our excellent team of part-time instructors, Assistant Instructors, and Divemasters.
Our goals are to offer diving courses that are priced competitively, scheduled conveniently, and conducted to assure a fun and safe experience. Most importantly, we want to certify divers who will become competent, confident and safe divers.
Our facility is perfect for training with comfortable classrooms, locker rooms, and our 12’ deep 50’ x30’ indoor heated pool.

How much does it cost to get certified?
A: There are 3 costs to consider when getting certified:
- Educational fees -approximately $430
- Minimum equipment requirement of mask, fins, and snorkel - from approximately $150 - $350. Students are offered discounts from 10-15%.
- Cost of Open Water training dive trip - minimum $40 for local diving
Who is eligible to get certified?
A: Students must meet these prerequisites:
- Minimum age - 10 years
- Must qualify medically
- Minimal proficiency in water skills and comfortable in the water
How long is class?
A: 16 hours academic / pool at MTSS combined with home independent study
My ears hurt when I dive down in the water? How can I dive if they hurt?
A: The pain is a natural result of not equalizing the effects of water pressure at depth. In scuba class, you will learn how to equalize and you will not feel pain.
What about sharks?
A: Only a few of the almost 200 species of sharks are potential dangerous to man, and those rarely, if ever are seen by divers. When they are encountered, they are typically shy and afraid of a creature as large as a man blowing bubbles. Statistically, shark attacks on scuba divers are so rare, you are safer diving with sharks than walking in your neighborhood.
Do I have to buy my own equipment?
A: All divers would be wise to invest in a minimum of a quality snorkeling set. Diving equipment is “life support” equipment, so quality, proper fit and proper performance is essential to enjoyment and safety. Snorkel equipment is required for class. Other equipment is supplied for training, but it is recommended every diver invest in their own equipment.
How much does a full set of equipment cost?
A: MTSS offers packages which include the basic equipment needed ranging in price from $1,100 to $2,895. These packages are a much better value than retail pricing. New students receive special discounts ranging from 5%-10%.
Is there anywhere to dive in Middle Tennessee?
A: Yes, MTSS offers escorted diving on weekends at local dive sites from May-October. We also offer a wide range of Florida, Caribbean and overseas tours year-round. The Cool Springs Scuba Club also offers local dive excursions for its members.
